Interview with Alex/ Axia!

Portugese grinders Axia are a new band featuring members of The Ominous Circle, Holocausto Canibal, Heavenwood and Colosso. Noted Grindcore label Selfmadegod released their debut album Pulverized in April. I was really impressed with their blistering sound and bleak outlook. I spoke to vocalist Alex Vale about the origins of the band, their debut album Pulverized and more. Peter 'Trendcrusher' K.
The band features members of The Ominous Circle, Holocausto Canibal, Heavenwood and Colosso. How did you get together to form the band?
We basically do a lot of touring with some of the bands you've mentioned, in fact we share a few members in studio as well as on the road. The idea to create a new band was quite clear and intuitive.

What about Grindcore appeals to you? Why did you decide to start a band playing the genre?
To be honest I'm not sure whether we can be labeled as such, but I can't deny that we all have a deep admiration for the old masters like Nasum, Lock Up and ENT, the adrenaline that comes from such an extreme paced genre is probably the main focus of our enthusiasm and our engine to creation.
You have described your album Pulverized as “was tailored according to the drama of being alive. A negative manifesto.” Tell us a bit more about the album.
Lyrically, the album revolves around the edge of existence. Life as filthy punishment that makes our consciences tired of being alive. The inability to overcome all the obstacles that were made to hard and make life worthless - Ceasing to exist and the negation of a material existence are a constant subject during the record.
What was the writing and recording process for the album?
The writing process was fast, it took us about a month to built the pre-production demo and shortly after we started the studio sessions. The music was composed by two main contributors and it was quite easy to achieve what we thought that it would be a decent record.

      What’s currently on your playlist?
My playlist changes quite often, but lately I've been addicted to Gary Numan, Skinny Puppy, Gluecifer, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Monster Truck, amongst many others.
What are bands from Portugal that our readers should check out?
There's a lot of great bands from Portugal that worth a listen, the list is almost endless and       I'm afraid to miss a good amount of great acts, I'll only mention a couple of those currently on my playlist: Corpus Christii, Analepsy, Bizarra Locomotiva, Sonneillon BM, Pestifer and Dead Meat.
You recently performed at the SWR BARROSELAS METALFEST. Do you have any shows/tours planned?
We did a show at the great SWR METALFEST and we're currently working on a full tour which can take our music to different places in the near future.
Thanks for doing this interview. Do you have any final words?
Thank you and your readers for this opportunity to propagate our filthy agenda. Forward leads nowhere.
